Why Do Anti-Immigration Dems Keep Getting Indicted by Biden DOJ?
News broke moments ago that Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar will be indicted this afternoon.
Cuellar is known as one of the few border security Democrats and he often supports positions amenable to conservatives like cutting off travel funding for illegal immigrants. However, Cuellar does oppose some policies like a wall on the Southern Border.
Nevertheless, Cuellar is widely perceived to be a rare dissenting voice on immigration in the Democrat congressional caucus. He often makes news as being one of the only border state Democrat to call out Biden’s inaction on the Southern Border–– and on occasion, he will even publicly plead with the administration for help.
In January 2022, his home in Laredo was raided by the FBI and a flurry of media reports have said that both Cuellar and his wife are implicated. At this time, there are no primary sources that indicate what the raid was related to or why he is being indicted.
Nevertheless, one can not help but notice this is the second time this has happened.
Mayor Eric Adams of New York was elected on the auspices that he would be a more moderate alternative to hardline leftist progressive predecessors like Mayor Bill DeBlasio. In some ways, like improving the relationship between the Mayor’s office and the police union, Adams has been successful.
However, once Texas Governor Gregg Abbott and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis began bussing illegal immigrants from their respective states to major cities like New York, Adams quickly struck a conservative-leaning tune. He warned this would “destroy’ New York [because] we are getting over 10,000 migrants a month” and he anxiously noted there was “no end in sight.” Contemporaneously, the city reported that it was housing over 110,000 “asylum-seekers,” and Adams traveled to Washington D.C. to lobby President Biden for action.
But then something curious happened. When Adams boarded the plane to go to D.C. he told reporters about the importance of his trip and the need for action on immigration. By the time he landed in D.C. one of his top donor’s homes had been raided by the FBI and he called the meeting with other mayor’s in the nation’s capitol off.
Roughly two months later, Adam’s phone was seized by the FBI. There are three active investigations around him, although the Mayor himself has not been indicted as of yet. Some of the investigations deal with tiny details of state campaign finance law while others merely allege he helped the Turkish Embassy jump through New York’s burdensome regulatory hurdles to open faster.
Since then, Adams has been far quieter on immigration, as having other Democrats who were just starting to make rumbles about the issue.
With this in mind, one must wonder: why have both the biggest Democrat figures to raise the specter of the immigration crisis been swept up in mysterious investigations just before the presidential election?
