Blaine Musca, a travel influencer with a few hundred thousand followers, goes by the name BeachBumBlaine on social media. Her content resembles typical influencer content; bikinis, fruit bowls, and exotic locations.
In her most recent video, Blaine went to India for Holi. Holi is the famous Indian holiday where celebrators throw coloured powder at each other. The video is titled, “If you’re a blonde BEWARE INDIA [caps in original].”
(Still of moment where Blaine yells “stop!” as multiple Indian men grab her)
Within the first few minutes of the video where Blaine discusses her arrival in the subcontinent, you can see her become approached by a group of men. “Stop!” she shouts as the men surround her and “molest” her. This is done despite the fact she has at least one Western male companion with her at the time.
(Still that shows the “shit water” Blaine refers to)
Later, she and her fellow traveler have “shit water” thrown on them and they are forced to “hide in a hallway” and seek the protection of good samaritans. This temporarily ruins Blaine’s hair and she describes the situation as a “survival experience.”
This event followed a gang rape of a Brazilian woman just weeks prior in India's eastern state of Jharkhand. The woman was camping with her husband when they were attacked by several Indian nationals. The woman and man, who have not been named but are alive, were later found by police on the side of the road. Both had been beaten and the woman had been raped. Police arrested 3 men who are alleged to have participated in the attack and four more assailants are reported by police to be at large, according to NBC News.
This follows a rape of a sedated patient by an Indian-born doctor in Texas. Shafeeq Sheikh, who was 46 at the time of his sentencing in 2018 is a former physician at Baylor College of Medicine. He was sentenced to 10 years of probation and compelled to register as a sex offender following his conviction.
Indian immigration to the United States has continued to balloon over the last several decades. There are around 5 million legal Indian immigrants in the US, according to the Migration Policy Institute. Similarly, Indians are the third-largest group of undocumented immigrants in America, according to the Pew’s 2021 estimates, which estimated a population of 725,000.
Research done by Pew has indicated that 90% of Indians see rape as a major problem in their culture and 83% have stated that the problem is growing, according to a 2014 study. No federal agency has reported figures on any elevated propensity amongst legal or illegal alien Indians toward sexual assault, however, the American Psychological Association has found that 79% of Indians born on US soil have reported first or secondhand accounts of sexual abuse.
